The Hiring Process
How Tech Interviews Run at Pune Companies
Service firms, capability centres and product companies in the city mostly use these five stages, and Bengaluru and Hyderabad follow a similar order.
01
Online Assessment
Tests: aptitude, reasoning and a timed coding or SQL test.
Prepare: solve timed sets instead of reading solutions.
02
Technical Round
Tests: core concepts for the role and how you handle follow-ups.
Prepare: one worked example for every concept you list.
03
Project Discussion
Tests: your design choices, tools and what broke.
Prepare: a two-minute and a ten-minute version.
04
Managerial Round
Tests: how you deal with deadlines, bugs and teamwork.
Prepare: two or three short, true stories.
05
HR Discussion
Tests: communication, goals, relocation and pay expectations.
Prepare: the answers in the HR section below.
Hiring in Pune
Preparing for Pune’s IT Hiring Market
Pune hires a large share of India’s entry-level tech talent. Big IT services companies recruit freshers in volume through hiring drives, weekend walk-ins and referrals, while product firms and capability centres take fewer people and test deeper. Most openings appear on Naukri and LinkedIn, and one fresher can be in several hiring processes in the same month.
With that many candidates per opening, interviewers decide quickly. They look first for clear fundamentals, a project you can explain and composed HR answers, which is exactly what the sessions on this page train.
Where the city hires
- HinjewadiRajiv Gandhi Infotech Park and large IT services campuses
- KharadiEON IT Park, services firms and capability centres
- Magarpatta CityIT services and consulting offices
- Baner and BalewadiProduct companies and startups
- Viman Nagar and YerawadaCommercial IT parks and captive centres
Our Method
How Backbenchers Prepares You
Sessions begin once the core modules of your track are done and carry on through your job search. Each stage builds on the one before it.
Stage 1 Get your story ready
- Resume and profile review
- Resume, Naukri and LinkedIn entries are checked against what you can explain in person.
- Project walkthroughs
- You learn to explain your project in two minutes and in ten, with a reason for every tool.
Stage 2 Practise under pressure
- Panel-style mock interviews
- A mentor asks questions the way a hiring panel would, then reviews every answer with you.
- Role-specific questions
- SQL and Spark for data engineering, RAG and LLM behaviour for Gen AI, test case design and Selenium for software testing.
- AI mock interviews
- Extra technical and HR rounds on demand, with instant feedback on clarity and confidence.
Stage 3 Learn from real interviews
- Debrief after each company interview
- Questions that went badly become the focus of your next session.
- Repeat until the offer
- Mocks continue through your job search, not only before the first application.
Sample Questions
Technical Interview Questions for Freshers
Questions that come up often in technical rounds for data, AI and testing roles. Open one to see the points an interviewer listens for.
Data engineering rounds focus on SQL, Spark and pipeline thinking. Expect to write queries live.
01 What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING?
WHERE filters rows before grouping and cannot use aggregates. HAVING filters groups after aggregation, for example departments whose average salary is above a value.
02 How would you find and remove duplicate records?
GROUP BY the key with HAVING COUNT(*) > 1 to find them, or ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY key ORDER BY updated date) to keep one row, then test the delete on a copy first.
03 What causes a shuffle in Spark, and why does it matter?
groupBy, joins and repartition move data between executors, which costs network and disk time. Filter early, broadcast small tables and choose sensible partitions.
04 When would you choose ETL over ELT?
ETL transforms before loading and suits strict schemas. ELT loads raw data and transforms it inside a cloud warehouse such as Snowflake or Redshift, often with dbt. Link it to a choice in your project.
05 Your daily pipeline failed overnight. What do you do first?
Read the failed task log, check whether the source arrived or changed, rerun without creating duplicates, tell the people who use the data, and add a check that catches it earlier.
Gen AI rounds check whether you understand model behaviour and can design a working system.
01 What is RAG, and why use it instead of fine-tuning?
Relevant chunks are retrieved from a vector store and added to the prompt, so answers stay grounded in current data. Updating documents is cheaper than retraining; fine-tuning suits behaviour, not fresh facts.
02 Why do language models hallucinate, and how do you reduce it?
Models predict likely text, not verified facts. Ground them with retrieval, instruct them to answer only from context and admit gaps, lower the temperature and test against known questions.
03 What is an embedding?
Numbers that represent the meaning of a text, so similar texts sit close together. Embeddings power semantic search in FAISS or Chroma.
04 How do you choose a chunk size?
Small chunks are precise but lose context; large ones keep context but add noise and cost. Test sizes and overlap against user questions and measure retrieval hits.
05 How would you keep an LLM app fast and affordable?
Smaller models for simple steps, caching, shorter context, streamed responses and token tracking per request.
Software testing rounds mix testing concepts, test case writing on the spot and a Selenium or API question.
01 What is the difference between severity and priority?
Severity is how badly a defect breaks the software; priority is how soon it must be fixed. A spelling mistake on the home page can be low severity but high priority.
02 Write test cases for a login page.
Valid and invalid credentials, empty fields, password masking, lockout after failed attempts, “remember me”, and boundary values for field lengths. Interviewers look for structure, not a long list.
03 What is the difference between smoke and regression testing?
Smoke testing is a quick check that a new build is stable enough to test. Regression testing confirms that existing features still work after a change.
04 How do you handle a dynamic element in Selenium?
Use a stable locator such as a relative XPath or CSS selector, then an explicit wait for the element to be visible or clickable instead of a fixed sleep.
05 What do you check when testing a REST API?
Status codes, response body and schema, headers, error handling for bad input, and response time, usually built as a collection in Postman.
HR Interview Questions and Mistakes to Avoid
Questions to rehearse out loud
01 Tell me about yourself.
About a minute: education, the skills and one project that fit this role, and why you want it. Not your resume read aloud.
02 Why is there a gap in your career?
The reason in one sentence, how you kept learning, then what you can do now. Over-explaining makes a gap look bigger.
03 Why are you moving into this field?
What sparked the interest, the steps you took such as a course or project, and how earlier experience helps.
04 What are your salary expectations?
Research the usual range for the role and city first, give a range, and show that the role and learning matter to you as well.
05 Are you open to relocation or shift work?
Answer honestly now. Accepting and backing out later damages your chances with that company.
Mistakes that cost freshers the offer
- Reciting definitions with no example of using them
- Listing tools on the resume you cannot discuss in depth
- Going silent when stuck instead of explaining your approach
- Long answers that never reach the point
- Guessing confidently instead of saying how you would find out
- Not knowing what the company does or why you applied
A Plan You Can Follow
A Four-Week Interview Preparation Plan
Week 1
Revise the Fundamentals
List the skills five job descriptions repeat, revise them and solve timed problems daily.
Week 2
Build Your Project Story
Write short and long versions, prepare a reason for every tool and cut what you cannot explain.
Week 3
Rehearse Under Pressure
Sit at least three full mock interviews, review them and redo the weak answers.
Week 4
Research the Company
Read about the company and team, revise your error list and keep the last day light.
Before an online interview
- Test camera, mic and the meeting link a day before
- Keep a mobile hotspot ready
- Quiet, well-lit room with a plain background
- Close other apps and notifications
- Try the company’s coding platform once
- Resume, pen and paper within reach
- Join five minutes early
- Look at the camera when you speak
Practice Partner
Revise With Assisting AI, Our Education Partner
Assisting AI is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that listens to a conversation, writes down each question and explains a model answer within seconds. Learners run it during mock sessions, so every session also becomes a revision note. It works in English, Hindi and Hinglish, which helps when you understand a concept but struggle to say it in English.
- Compare your answers with its explanations after a mock session
- Capture a coding or SQL problem and study the worked solution
- Read an explanation in Hindi, then answer again in English
- Look back through saved sessions for questions you keep missing
For practice only
Never use it inside an actual interview. Employers treat outside help as malpractice and can withdraw the offer. Backbenchers supports honest preparation only.
What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING?
- WHERE filters rows before grouping
- HAVING filters groups after GROUP BY
- Aggregates like COUNT() belong in HAVING
Mixed the two up, then corrected it. Add to revision list.
Questions
Interview Preparation in Pune: FAQs
01 Can I join if I live outside Pune?
Yes. Sessions are online, so learners anywhere in India can take part. The round formats follow how Pune companies hire, and they carry over to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other IT cities.
02 Which Pune employers have your learners joined?
Employers include TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, Capgemini and Accenture, many with large Pune campuses. The success stories page has learner reviews.
03 Is interview preparation included in the course?
Yes. Mentor sessions, AI mock interviews and debriefs after company interviews come with every Backbenchers track rather than as a paid add-on.
04 Is preparation different for freshers and experienced candidates?
Yes. Freshers face more questions on fundamentals and academic projects. Candidates with experience or a gap face more on past work and the switch, and sessions are adjusted to that.
05 Are the sessions conducted in English?
Mostly, since most tech interviews in India are in English. Mentors help you rephrase answers you first think through in Hindi.
06 Can I use Assisting AI during an actual interview?
No. It is for revision only. Outside help during a live interview breaks employer rules and can cost you the offer.
07 What happens if a company interview goes badly?
A mentor goes through it with you, and the next session concentrates on the questions that went wrong.
